R.I.P. Marilyn Chambers

A brief, and very sad, farewell to the magnificent - and genre-crossing - Marilyn Chambers, who was found dead on Sunday at age 56. According to Adult Video News, she was found in her mobile home (where she had been living??) by her daughter. Cause of death unknown, but they say they aren't treating it as suspicious and autopsy will be performed.

Industry folks are coming out to pay their respects, including people I didn't even know were still around, like Johnny Keyes (who starred in Behind the Green Door in probably the first interracial scene in a big feature movie, with Chambers). Chambers' death is also, predictably, bringing out the cretins (lots of Christians) who want to suggest that such a sinful and disgusting woman got what she deserved. Oh well. I'm not paying much attention to them, and neither should you.

I will remember Chambers not only for being perhaps the most beautiful woman in porn, and not only for being one of the most open and upfront porn stars regarding their career, but also for being one of the first crossover stars, being the lead in David Cronenberg's Rabid - a film I saw before I had even seen a single porn movie. My favorite movie of hers, though, is The Resurrection of Eve - one of the best porn movies ever made, in my opinion.

As porn fans, horror fans, or a bit of both, let's remember Chambers with fondness and admiration.

Very sad, Chambers was fantastic in Rabid, and it is entirely expectant that the Christian crusade would be the first to cast a stone at her. Good find and appreciated rememberances Triple G!

I read that she was found on April 1st. I feel so sad for her daughter. I mean, I feel sad in general. But I especially sympathize with her daughter right now. I can't imagine how difficult it must have been.

I know - I can't imagine having to find my mother dead, and especially at such a young age. I haven't heard anything about the father - who is he?

I sure hope she has a good support network. I know Chambers was apparently very private and quiet, so I don't know how extensive her family connections are.

Very very sad.

Very nice post. I think the fact that she was always non apologetic for her career was admirable.

I first saw Marilyn Chambers in her comeback film, Still Insatiable, in which she was easily the peer of adult performers decades younger than she was. I've been meaning to watch Rabid, but I don't know if I'll be able to do so after this. Too saddening.

Very nice post. While I don't think I've seen any of her x-rated work, I've caught her in a few R rated films and used to enjoy her columns in Penthouse. I just got a copy of Rabid, and I look forward to checking that out and reviewing it soon.

Specs - agreed. She didn't change her name, which in my opinion rocks. Definitely challenged (and continues to challenge) notions of what a porn star can be.

Davies - I know, it's tough, but watch Rabid. I plan to watch it again soon (saw it when I was a kid, had no idea who she was). You should also see Resurrection of Eve if you haven't seen it. It's amazing. Insatiable 1 and 2 are on my to-watch list. I hear they're amazing.

Bugg - I look forward to reading your Rabid review. And you should really check out her 70s xxx work. It's great, and in my opinion where she really excelled as an actress and artist (I know, people don't think this is something that's possible in xxx...).

Thanks for stopping by and showing some love to the woman who helped change the face of porn y'all!

Gore-Gore Girl: I will always remember her as a true trailblazer. She was the first porn star that I was aware of - the first one that had a name and a personality - Therefore there was always something terribly exotic and intimidating about her. She was a truely bad girl, a pretty blonde who smiled and talked about her porn life openly. She was forbidden, completely wrong and covered in shame, and as a teenage boy I wanted her more than life itself.
Only bravery can be that erotic. -- Mykal
